Not an algorithm. Not a social feed. A hand-curated catalog for readers who take their faith — and their reading — seriously.
Vellichor is the strange wistfulness of used bookstores — that feeling of being surrounded by stories you haven't read yet, lives you haven't lived, wisdom you haven't encountered. We named this catalog after that feeling because it's exactly what we want readers to find here.
Amazon lumps Christianity in with Buddhism, astrology, and self-help. Goodreads has no way to tell you whether a book is a Grace Livingston Hill novel — where every character breathes their faith — or a general clean romance that happens to have a church in it. There is no trusted, organized, curated place to discover Christian books.
Vellichor is that place. Every book is classified by its Faith Spectrum level, theological tradition, audience, and subgenre. You can find Reformed theology, Amish romance, Catholic literary fiction, or Christian fantasy. Books safe for your ten-year-old, or academic theology for your pastor.
It is not a social network. It is not a review aggregator. It is a library — calm, curated, and built to last.
Faith-minded readers face a real problem. Christian fiction spans an enormous range — from books where every page is saturated in Scripture, to stories that are simply clean and wholesome with a quiet faith in the background. All of it matters. None of it is the same.
Without a way to distinguish between them, readers end up disappointed — either picking up something far more evangelical than they expected, or something so lightly Christian they wonder why it was shelved there at all. Parents can't confidently choose books for teenagers. Pastors can't recommend with certainty. Book clubs don't know where to start.
Vellichor was built to solve that. Every book carries a Faith Spectrum rating, tradition tags, content flags, and a curator's honest note. You always know what you're picking up before you open it.
The most important thing we built. Every book in the catalog carries one of five Faith Spectrum levels, so you always know how much faith is in the story before you open it.
Every book is screened for content that matters to faith-minded readers. These flags appear on every book tile and in the full book detail — so you're never surprised.
Safe for all adult readers. No sexual content, no crude language. This is the baseline promise of the Vellichor catalog — every book here meets this standard.
Romantic content is present but restrained — nothing beyond a kiss. Useful for readers who want to know romance is a thread in the story without it crossing into content they'd rather avoid.
The book contains thematic or action violence — battle scenes, spiritual warfare, crime, or conflict with real consequence. Not gratuitous, but present. Good to know before handing a book to a younger reader.
The book deals with loss, trauma, abuse, mental illness, or other difficult content. This flag is not a warning to avoid — many of the most powerful books here carry it. It's a heads-up so you can choose the right season to read it.
A central character comes to faith during the course of the book. Some readers seek these out; others prefer not to have the arc spoiled. This flag lets you choose.
The story contains a major turn — death of a character, a twist, or a development — that is best discovered while reading. No spoilers here. Just a signal that the book goes somewhere unexpected and significant.
This book is part of a series — either book 2 or later, or the first in a continuing story. Series entries are noted so you can find the right starting point and know what you're committing to.
No romantic subplot of any kind. This flag is used selectively — for thrillers, nonfiction, biography, and idea-driven fiction where a reader actively seeking romance-free reading would benefit from knowing. Not applied to every book that happens to lack romance.
Heavier emotional, spiritual, or thematic content — not inappropriate, but more intense than lighter YA. May include moral complexity, spiritual darkness, trauma, or difficult subject matter handled with care. Suitable for older teens and adults who are ready for it.
Every book in Vellichor is hand-selected. There is no bulk import, no automated scraping, no algorithm deciding what belongs here. Each title is evaluated, classified, and described by a curator who can speak to what the book actually does.
Curator notes are honest — not marketing copy. They name what makes a book distinctive, flag anything a reader should know going in, and sometimes acknowledge theological controversy or limitations openly. If a book has earned its place despite its flaws, the note will say why.
God speaks to people differently. Vellichor is built on that conviction. A book that changes one reader's life may leave another cold — and both of those things can be true at once. Our goal is not to tell you what to love, but to give you enough information to find what God might have for you in a particular season.
The catalog will grow. Voices will be added. The standard will not change.
If you have a book you'd like to see in the catalog, a question about a curation decision, or anything else — we'd genuinely love to hear from you.
